Tom WilsonJune 1, 2024Shakespeare lost sleep wishing he could write like Rick Garfield reads water. Monet once said “ I dream of painting like Rich Garfield fly fishes”. Jimi Hendrix practiced until his fingers were bleeding in hopes of playing guitar like Rich Garfield casts a fly. Rich Garfield once counted to infinity, two times…no wait, that was Chuck Norris..sorry, but you get my point. Seriously, I consider it a rare privilege to spend time with and learn from a man that has reached the pinnacle of his trade through passion, curiosity, and perseverance. When Rich takes a break from being the top fly fishing guide in the Adirondacks … he goes fly fishing. What does that tell you ? I’ve known and have fished with Rich for over 15 years and consider him a good friend. As a college graduation gift, I recently brought my nephew on a trip with Rich which is now the basis of lifelong memories. Fishing was lights out. Rich put us on monster Trout for two days for just an epic trip! I cannot recommend highly enough. I cannot fathom how any guide could be all around better for in any way!! At this point in my life I have been able to fish with Rich numerous times and every time I learn an array of new skills and analysis techniques. I have also been fortunate enough to fish with multiple other guides during my life and while I have met some amazing guides; none compete with Richard. I confidently and personally believe that Rich is the best fly angler in the Adirondacks and he combines his skills and knowledge beautifully with his ability to teach. I took my first trip with Richard back in 2014 with my cousin as fly fishing was starting to grow in our lives. That one trip single handedly propelled fly fishing into my greatest passion in life. It was all of the little things that really stuck out and stuck with me since that first trip (ex. don't step on the green). Every trip since had a specific goal in mind (streamers, dry fly, pocket water, etc) to help grow myself as an angler and I do not know where I would be today without those trips. Rich is someone I now stay in touch with and consider a friend; that is how much our connection and respect for each other has grown through fly fishing and it all begin with one trip in 2014. If you are in the Adirondacks and looking for a guide book with Richard Garfield! I’m an accomplished fly fisherman but refine my skills every time I fish with him. He’s a pro, a coach, a mentor. I brought my 12 yr old on his first walk and wade and Rich couldn’t have been better, coached him all day until he put it all together and connected with a nice fish at the end of the trip. Thanks for everything Rich and looking forward to many more outings!
